Letter of Introduction

Hello Everyone,

My name is Geoff Curry I am 23, an inspiring writer and artist.

One day I just decided “Hey! Creative Writing looks like a fun class.” So I made a decision that I was going to take it. Little did I somewhat know that I needed to take some pre-req classes. I took English 1301 and 1302. I barely squeaked by 1301 English, but managed to make an A in 1302? How does that work? LOL! After the two semesters I made it to the class I’ve wanted to take. Though all my classes have been online because of the recent “upgrade” to the school. The new science building being built, really mess up the driving route for on campus classes. Also it has helped with the gas or that was the plan when gas prices were high.

My life up till college was lets say not that great in the way of living school being the main curse of my problem especially 9th grade, horrid teachers, bullies, and the overstress of everything. That led up to me playing hooky, and arguments and trouble with the family. But after all that I got through it. To be honest I never really thought I make to graduation. But I did, hurray to me!

As I stated in my opening comment, I’ve started to become writer and an artist. Keeping both in tact is a little hard at times but manageable. For a couple of years I’ve had an Art Community page over @ Deviantart.com, I do accept Commissions if anyone is interested, I am fairly cheap as prices goes. I say go have a look for yourself over at http://darkpiro.deviantart.com/. I do have some art blogs I post my art to, but some are slightly graphic, but everyone here is old enough I bet.

Writing is a different story after reading some of my friend’s fan fiction and a few drawing that emerged from characters I came up with from reading and watching other things, then I was sudden hit with inspiration, so now I’m taking the creative writing class to improve such skill.

When I was selecting my classes for this semester, my adviser suggested the literary contest, so right at the start of the semester I asked Mrs. Garcia about it, and she e-mailed me back some forms for the contest, recently I’ve been racking my brain for a title of my entry. I did come up with such now I just need to come up with a good story. Wish me luck.

I hope everyone does his or her best in this class

Writing Practice 1: Creative Writing

Try This 0.1
In other words, write any sort of thing in your journal, and write various kinds of things. Pick 3-5 of the following (depending on how much depth you go into each) and explore where they take you in writing.

An Idea for a Story…
Recently I’ve been exploring the literary aspect of art, and coming up with many great thoughts in my own head, some times those. Around the start of mid December I decided I was going to create an anthology of books featuring my original character Marona. Doing so I’ve been holding a contest for my artist friends to enter their creations with co inhabitants in my fantasy world of the books. No actual story has come to light but I’m hoping after I enter this Literary contest held by Richland, the ideas will start flowing out. I believe Ideas can come from any corner of living or doing, an example from my experience would be watching “National Treasure Book of Secrets”, last night, and the title for one of my upcoming stories just popped in to my head like ‘snap’. I also like to think Muses work in mysterious ways.

Names for Characters...
When I come up with names for characters, I go straight for a name generator or alter an existing name from an Anime and Manga, but I reserve those for online games, such as Final Fantasy XI or World of Warcraft. Many characters I have made in recent months have all had Japanese influence imbedded into their names, for example I make up an English name then insert it into a Japanese name generator, which makes it fast and simple for naming characters. Naming characters with out a generator can be a bit tricky but you can obtain more uniqueness this way.

Title of Things you are never going to write…
“Journey to Hell: Ninja tale”, originally when I first started to write I tried to write a fan fiction of the Anime “Naruto” the outcome was not so good I’m sure if I went back and wrote it now I would have a better outline of the so called story.
“Untitled horror novel” this is just me but I do not care for horror genre at all, the only exception is zombies, because they’re awesome “Shaun of the Dead” best zombie movie ever~! But yes, the world doesn’t need more creepy lamps attacking you. (Family guy joke on Stephen King)

Something Else: Drawing
Along with writing, I can draw a bit though I’m not very good I think I am getting better somewhat, I think since 2004 I’ve been keeping my hand sharp, I believe if I have a good mind that can write, and a attuned hand characters will come out of the woodwork at a nice pace, possibly one everyday if I keep with it. If my inspiration (girlfriend) stays with me I believe I’ll become an improved artist in no time at all. Hopefully sharing my art with everyone will not be a major problem.

Journal Entry for English

Class Chosen: Online Speech Class

Q/A:
1. What types of media were you allowed to use?
2. I've seen your video, and sorry about the missing sound, but do you think that quality of the sound and/or video has any influence on the eventual grade?

1a. Since this is an online speech class, we're able to use a variety of ways to deliver our speeches to the teacher. One being able to record yourself from your web cam or video camera and upload it to “you tube”, so yes this would be a combo of sound and video. Which makes me happy to see that online course such as this come into the 21st century.

2a. I do not, maybe partially the sound but I believe most of my grade is the way I present it. For instance, I sat for most my presentation, like a Video-Blog, I did not get a good comment on that, teacher suggested I stand, also I was reading from mini cue cards I had written since it was my first time actually giving a speech, and I couldn't solidly come up with anything just freely so I had to come up with some thing, but no the sound and video quality isn't the real issue when grading.

Topic: Online Courses, and 21st century technology

Since we’ve moved into the twenty-first century, many classes have followed, and either assimilated its class to fit those of the current age. Such as my speech class, with the coming of “you tube”, and other video upload sites. We’ve have had the option of using current technology such as a “web cam” or digital video camera, to record our speeches, and upload them to “you tube” or burn them to a DVD/CD and mail them in to the teacher. Along with uploading to the web, Email has also made the class easier with group or teacher discussion, recently I had a group project in my speech class, I took initiative, and e-mailed everyone in my group and sent my hello, this worked well because mostly everyone answered. The other good thing was a group member was going to be out for surgery, so she notified everyone in the group, which is how communication should be in a class, as did the teacher. In retrospect, 21st century technology, helps in many ways and has an advantage over traditional means.

Vana'Diel Vespa: Adventurer Persona Investigation(working draft)

Vana’Diel Vespa: Adventurer Persona Investigation

Today I will travel to the world of Vana’Diel tapping into the persona of three adventurers Faith, Erwin and Anemone. Looking deep into their inner selves to see what moves them and makes them tick.
Anemone, Erwin, and Faith will be going through a series of questions, as well as fighting experiments to see how it effects the inner working of there mind to see if there is any change to the subjects. The adventurers will travel to a designated location and train for several days up to a week or two in the dangerous depths of Fei’Yin within the nook and crannies of Vana’Diel’s mysterious dungeon. Because I wish to learn how their motivational force guides the three young heroines into battle.
The day had begun I grabbed my things and headed to Amutiyaal, trading him 300 gil he warped me. After I came to a complete stop I walked in the bustling eastern city of Aht Urghan. Walking around, while looking to find a quiet spot to sit. Making my way toward the mog house area I found a small empty stall sitting behind it so I could not be found. After some time, I was hailed over by the trio of heroine’s leader Anemone. I got up following her to the small group giving our introductions. Finishing up that, Anemone suggested I hold on tight as she shouted out for a Teleport-Vhazl, which would take us to the Northern Lands. Soon after a white mage came along and Teleported us for a small fee we vanished holding on to the hand tight of Anemone and Erwin.
Releasing my my grip on the two girls I slowly opened my eyes only to have sharp brisk winds blew white flakes of snow directly on to face. Anemone suggested something warmer then what I had on at the current time. She handed me an Errant Houppelande. Slipping it on over my current clothing selection. We headed onward before we even took a few steps Anemone stated that would be a long journey to the dungeon of Fei’Yin and would possibly take the entire twenty four hour period or maybe even more to get there.
As we walked I asked various question along the way, prodding and picking at their brain slowly but surely. We passed multiple monsters along the way, which made me shiver and jump out of my skin but Anemone just gave me a confident smile to let me know everything was ok. After our long trek we reached the entrance of the cavernous dungeon Fei’Yin. Walking inside we rested, watching the trio of heroines pull out their battle armor along with their razor sharp weapons. I queried about the weapons and choice “the lance holds shear force in its entire beings, along with its high damage ratio it that brings the enemy down quick and piereces the heavens their ungodly soul!”(Emi 3:45pm 9-12-08) “I used Great Axe so I would do more damage and could hold hate better, instead of an axe/shield combo to lower damage done to me.” (lionheart, 12:55pm, 9-12-08). Erwin was a Black Mage, wizard of the elements so her weapon of choice was her explosive magic. I inquired asking why did she choose magic over a sharp weapon “Though I love daggers and swords, I chose magic over them because of all the power it hits the enemy with in a few seconds. Also taking into account is that I came from a family of Mages.”(Mackenzie 1:45pm 9-12-08) As i finished examined each of the girls from where I sat. Anemone called me over, picking me up on to her back carrying me Opo Opo back, climbing on to Anemone. All three girls running swiftly through the cement covered dungeon. Faith stopped seeing some clockwork pods that needed some destroying. Anemone slipped me off her back, as I found a safe spot to hide. The girls drew their weapons running toward the pod. Watching intently on their movements, I began to record what I saw.
After the little scuffle with the pods Anemone took my hand, and headed into the basement of the mysterious dungeon of Fei’Yin. A bit of time passed and I was out of breath not being use to the long walking. Anemone, Erwin, and Faith parked themselves in a long hallway adjacent to various monsters and rooms. I sat down to watch the girls intently as they fought with ferocity.
After a few battles Anemone came and sat next to me, her pet wyvern followed and snuggled in to my lap, petting him on his scaly yet smooth skin. I looked over at Anemone see a passionate fire in her eyes. I asked what reason was there to fight she replied with an exuberance in her voice “To become stronger, faster, and more reliable to others around us! To live to see another day! To protect your friends and protect the country that is Vana’Diel!!” (Emi, 9-11-08 7:30pm) Anemone stood up and stuck her lance into the ground the fire in her eye even more passionate after talking to her she rushed in to battle stabbing Droma right through the center with her 5 tier attack Penta-thrust.
After several more fights Erwin came and set in my lap, something about her felt more tranquil about her being, then anemone. I asked her the same question as I did Anemone. “I mainly fight to become stronger. Stronger, so I can protect the people I care about. But my real reason is… dad… I know he is still alive out there… somewhere… I’ll find him, one day.” (Mackenzie, 2:15pm 9-12-08) Watching Erwin slinking out of my lap, positioning her hands into the spell-casting pose, at the enemy.
Erwin got up completely sending a little ‘OOMPH!’ at the enemy. Faith came over and squatted down. She stared at me for a long while before smiling confidently at me. Looking back at her she had a very assertive aura around her. I asked Faith the same question as both other girls. “'Because we are adventurers. We chose to live this way. When enemies block our paths we go right through them if we have to. Our job is to explore the world that is Vana'diel.'”(Lionheart, 1:30pm 9-12-08)
As I finished jotting down all my notes, I realized that even though everyone story may sound the different, the goal in the end is always the same. To become strong, and protect loved one and everything around them because that is what drives the adventurers of the world know as Vana’Diel!

Vana'Diel Problem: Gil

Vana’Diel Problem, Gil

Within the vast world of Vana’Diel, the currency of gil is circulated among the masses regularly. For some it is a problem to obtain it, others can obtain it with ease time obtaining gil. I will recall past experiences, traveling around Vana’diel to interview a handful of adventurers to see what they’ve to say.

In personalized experiences I have had great deal of trouble with keeping gil in the pocket. Primarially when I’ve gone out on an adventure, as well as improving on my culinary skills. Most noticeably is when gil I obtain is a respectable amount, another piece of gear is required and that amount of gil is reset back to a low amount. Typically obtaining gil back is effortless, but as the saying goes takes money to make money.
I chanced upon Eirwen MacKenzie; as she sketched out her problem and solution “One troublesome thing is getting gil. We all know and share that same problem, and want the gil fast. I solved my own problem by looking for a mobs or enemies that have a decent drop rate on an item that sells fast for a firm amount of gil. But when there are dozens of that same item already offered on the AH, getting your gil will be a bit harder, especially if you want to sell it for the same price everyone else does. My trick is not to lower the price to put it on by 1 gil, not by 10 gil, but also not by 100 gil, because I've had some times that this trick of mine made the item drop in value. My trick is to put the item on for about 13 to 23 gil under the current price.” (MacKenzie, 4-11-08 1:22pm).

Having another appointment with another adventurer Jif Whiffy, I asked him the same question; he informed me ”When I try to make gil, I do so by using a variety of methods that don't require much competition against other adventurers. For instance, fishing up moat carp that sell fast on the Auction House; farming bee hive chips in Giddeus, a place with a plethora of bees, which I then use in crafting; and also gardening, which just requires some seeds and pots and patience to watch them grow. The key to my success is to not monopolize one thing, otherwise, I could jeopardize the amount of profit I could normally take in.“(Whiffy, 4-11-08 12:08pm)

My final interview was with on miss Kiela Starcatcher, she approached me, sitting down for a cup of Windurtian tea, asking her, the same question, “Yes, I have trouble with gil. I’m a crafting addict, and I want awesome gear for my highly experienced jobs. I deal with that by training furiously and selling all the drops from mobs and enemies, on top of gardening religiously. With the three mule adventurers that garden too, allowing for one hundred thousand gil on a weekly basis, and that usually enough keeping me afloat at my experience for a few days. Still food and gear is expensive.”(Starcatcher 4-11-08 8:00pm)

I’ve learned today that many adventurers have gil trouble throughout Vana’Diel from the highly experienced to the newest adventurer on the block. We all have to start out somewhere and obtain gil from various sources. I hope this has been an insight to the problematic and answer to the financial view of Vana’Diel.

Anemone's Study: Cooking

Anemone’s Study of Cooking, in Everyday Life of Vana’Diel

Ever since I was the age to become a Heroine, other citizens and thrill-seekers would talk about cooking and how it would help them when training to become stronger. During my earlier days I believed that food magically appeared from the Auction House or my mommy Mithra made it. Now that I have grown up and obtained more knowledge, I know now that adventurers create and make the food, for himself or herself, for selling. I will travel over to Windurst, and observe cooking from the cooking guild and cooking skill from various other venturous fighters.

Gathering myself, I strolled down to the cooking guild area, looking around noticing a multitude of chefs in the area. I talked to a Mithra who was standing near me. Her name was Qhum Knaidjn, asking her what she did, she told me the Culinary Guild Workers Union had appointed her to accept all manufactured goods from adventurers. Though she could not accept goods from those who had below standard culinary skills. Currently my culinary skill wasn’t as refined, so that is probably why Ms. Qhum wasn’t accepting manufactured goods from me. Possibly during my little expedition of the Culinary Guild I will enhance my cooking skill as well.

Ambling around the Culinary Guild a bit more watching as venturesome chefs ran in and out of the Culinary Guild’s shop. I walked into the shop and scoped it out. Behind the counter was a Mithra and Tarutaru, the shop’s proprietresses, inspecting the shop to see what they sold. Everything sold were ingredients for adventurers to buy. The items were fairly priced from observing. Inquiring the two store proprietresses if the prices were at a fixed price. The two responded. Telling me that some of their items were at a static price as well as quantity being limited, in addition to rapid sales. After the short discussion, the two store proprietresses went about serving the other customers as I left quietly. Strolling back down to Windurst Woods, enjoying the scenery as it passed.

Setting foot into Windurst Woods I made a beeline for the Auction House, which is where many heroes and heroines were standing around, even saw a few cooks amongst the group. I chatted with one bold and daring person called “Cookie Cakes” asking her how she did her cooking, telling me she bought most her ingredients from the Regional Vendors. Prices were better, in addition to the quantity had no shortage of sold ingredients. Furthermore, Ms. Cakes could not procure all the necessary ingredients from a certain region, since sometimes the nation of choice she cooked in did not achieve conquest superiority for the next 175 days. On top of that, not all things were easily obtainable via regional vendors. Ms. Cakes informed. Recipes that required a higher skill of cooking only had ingredients that were obtainable by killing monsters. Making it complex. Querying Ms. Cakes, how was she able to obtain such ingredients, she made aware that she did not have the fighting experience, to fight these monster herself. She would actually appeal help from her compadres and other madcap partners, which were more than willing. Saying farewell to Ms. Cakes, entrusting her to her cooking, wandering off.

The sun had gone, as the hour of darkness had been brought upon the city. Starting to think to myself. I will start a small self taught lesson from what was learned from these travelers I encountered today.

As daybreak rose over the city of Windurst, I ambled over to one of the local regional vendors buying up some oranges from the Tarutaru vendor. Hastening back to the Windurst Woods Auction House, I acquired a stack of water crystals. The plan of action went into play, to make a creation. Following a few assessment and oversight, outcomes. An accomplished task finally produced, six individual orange juice bottles.

Hereinafter, the observation of Culinary Guild activity alongside wanderer’s developing a like to cooking. It has become apparent, that cooking is entirely trouble-free. A very simple endeavor, if one knows where to obtain, and create culinary delights

Vana'Diel View: Anemone's Day

Observing Vana'Diel
A day in the life of my Final Fantasy XI Character, Anemone

Today was like any other day in Vana'Diel, nothing too out of the ordinary. I yawned and strected as I slowly opened my eyes, the morning rays of light creeped in through the small window of my Mog House. Sitting up in the bed of my rental room, I swung both feet to the side while streching once more. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, and sleepily walked over to talk to, Moogle. He was chipper, like usual, as he fluttered up and down with his purple bat-like wings. With a friendly "Kupo", he handed me some money from my mailbox where he kept most of my vauables. I petted my fluffy and fuzzy moogle then headed out the door.
Leaving the residential area of Lower Jeuno at a jogging pace, I Bumped into a few other adventurers as I heading toward the Auction House. Tapping on the auction counter, a voice from the window said, "What do you wish to purchase?" Thinking to myself about it, I asked for the "food section." After looking through what the Auction House had to offer, I decided to go with some Mithkabobs, adventurers could buy them singly or in a stack of twelve. I went with the stack believing it would last longer on the journey. As the stack of kabobs came through to the other side of the window they sizzled with the sound of freshly cooked meat. looking down, I could see the meat and peppers steaming because they had just come off the grill. I grabbed the kabobs, pushed the sack of gil I had through to the other side of the counter, wrapping up the kabobs, and tossing them in with the rest of my gear.
After rearranging the gear within my item sachet, turning around, I began walking toward the small fountain that was a few steps behind the Auction House. Sitting down at the base of the the fountain and looking around, I noticed various adventurers running back and forth through the streets of Jeuno. I faced the fountain and dipped my fingers into the water, letting them dance around the water's edge. I took my hand out of the water and dried it against my checker-plated armor that I was wearing. Getting up slowly, I began to stroll along the streets of Lower Jeuno. I ignored most the other adventurers that passed me by. As my stroll was nearing its end, I noticed I had wound up at the entrance to the luscious, green Rolanberry Fields. Continuing to walk, I spotted the guard Alrauvererat of Lower Jeuno, and greeting him.
After having a nice long talk with Alrauvererat, he asked me if I would care for the benefical magic know as signet, that would aid me in battle. agreeing with him, I watching as he raised up his hand, the sun bouncing of my armor, almost blinding me. Alrauvererat then asked if I needed a magic scroll of instant warp. pausing for a moment, I began to look within my item sachet. I could not find one and as I looking up at Alrauvererat, to tell him I did not have a warp scroll in my possesion, he then asking if I would care to use my conquest points I had accrued up over the course of my adventures. Nodding to him, he handing over the warp scroll, and I tossing it into the item sachet with all my other gear. closing up my item sachet, as I turned my head and noticing the sun was beginning to set. I picking up my sachet, heading quickly back to the residential area, and entering my rented Mog House.
walking inside, Moogle was estatic I had returned, as he cheerfully fluttered up and down with his little purple bat-like wings . Checking with my Moogle, the mailbox was empty, and he uttered a sad "kupo". Smiling and saying it was all right, I petted his furry little head, the red pom-pom bouncing back and forth. walking over to the bed, I slowly stretching and yawning as I laid down. closing my eyes, I drifting into a light sleep. Soon after however, the voice of another adventurer awoke me, asking me to join his group to fight monsters. I gladly accepting the invite and was quite amazed since the job class of dragoon was not invited very often. jumping out of bed, I quickly waved farewell to Moogle, and heading out the door, The leader and the rest of the group were in the beautiful Gardens of Ru’Lude, located at the top of Jeuno, and I decided the quickest method of arriving would be the elevator connecting the various levels of the Residential District. While searching for the group’s members, a discussion began on how one member was going to get to the the Eastern Altepa Desert since he did not have the Teleport Crystal that would allow for teleportation, and he decided disbanding was the best option. the group however, then deciding Crawler's Nest was the best place to fight monsters since it was just on the outskirts of Rolanberry Fields.
Finally, after the little squable was settled, the group leader nrought back the orginal member that had left earlier. At last, the team was ready and we heading toward Lower Jeuno's Chocobo Stables. As we got to the stables, the bright, yellow-plumed, two-legged riding birds let out a large "kweh" as they seemed to be excited. We talking to the attendant, handing her a bag of gil to rent the chocobos, and we were off. My new Vana'Diel adventure.
